How much do magazines pay for article submissions?

I'm interested in writing fiction for magazines but curious how to go about doing it or how much it pays. (I hold a bachelors and have worked in PR, so I think my writing experience will help).

  1. They don't pay anything for submissions. If they choose to PRINT the article, it depends on the particular magazine and article length. Reader's Digest is very friendly to short stories by unknown authors however they don't pay very much. The New Yorker will pay more than Reader's Digest. But they are a great deal more particular. Pick up a copy of Reader's Digest and towards the front, they actually tell you what they pay for accepted stories. It's a good place to start, even though they aren't big on fiction. Maybe you could try a human interest story. Good Luck.
  2. If you are serious about selling your writing, you should go to your local library or bookstore and look at the latest version of The Writer's Market. It details all the publishers, how much they pay, what they are looking for, and much more. Brief description from amazon: the 2007 Writer’s Market is the go-to guide for anyone who wants to be published. Featuring new and exclusive interviews with Alice Kaplan, Augusten Burroughs, and Jennifer Weiner, the latest edition also includes articles covering the basics of book proposals, how to get freelance writing gigs, the keys to successful query letters, the six rules critical to publishing success, and more.
