How strict are length requirements for article submission to academic journals?

I am in the process of preparing an article to be sumbitted to an academic journal. Their submission requirements state that the length of articles is 8,000 words including notes. My article is currently 8,550 words including notes. Will this be a problem? I have already cut it down quite a bit and to remove more will be very time-consuming.

  1. I think you're going to have to trim down. They have limits for a reason. Good luck!
  2. You should probably start paraphrasing and cutting out words you just don't need.
  3. Stick to the limit they have given you, or you risk being cut from the publication. It's tough to trim down an article. Perhaps you can get some help from colleagues. Good luck!
